Is This Thing On?

Posted in audio on December 15, 2018 by Word-Drum

Unable to blog for the last couple of years, I did have some ideas for posts.

Question:   What do the first telephone, and the modern smart phone, have in common?

         Answer:   Sound Quality.

With a dynamic opening like that, Word-Drum is back on line.

Here is a new demo of my song “Boy To Ramadi.” The song and others will be part of a CD that needs a producer (Mr. Phil Spector: Maybe we can work through the Internet).

You’re probably thinking “Who the …. is Word-Drum and why would I want to listen to his music?”

That’s not my real name, it’s Elvis and I’m alive!

Put that out and listen to this.

Blogging replaced creating music for the last several years. I’ll take a break from the blog while I’m making new music and demo tapes. You can hear them, just click

(Thaunk You Very Much)

“New Songs 2012” contains original blues, rock and jazz.
“One Man Band: Jam Session” is Straight-Ahead and more adventurous jazz.

Let these two tracks from John Coltrane give you strength to battle through the storms raining down on the once Land Of The Free.

Trane’s ‘Love Supreme’ was spiritually and artistically monumental, but the times and his probing nature pushed him to keep searching. Later in 1965 he made “Transition.”

By his death in 1967 the transition had been made. But like ‘Hope and Change,’ it’s not always a good thing. Within a year, Dr. King would be dead and the Welfare State was born.

Not everyone will appreciate the beauty of Trane’s late period. I just love it, but I see the wisdom of returning to A Love Supreme for a nation losing it’s soul.

He’s a lonely jihadi and longs for his day of murder and mayhem.

Here’s a demo of a new little blues tune (called for now): “KTJB” (Kill The Jews Blues). Made specially for Word-Drum readers who will appreciate the mild humor and hint of country blues feeling in the song.

I humbly offer it (after the remix) to the next Republican candidate for President. The subject is not one of Obama’s issues. It should be one of ours.

hero of the story

Watching too many movies. I get free movie channels for 3 months with my new Dishnet. It works fine except when it snows. We are having a blizzard so I was planning on actually reading a book tonight. It stopped snowing so it works again(Thank God, reading involves too much thinking…unless it’s on the Internet of course).

But even more suspenseful than the movies is waiting to find out if I survive the new year and have the price of admission for the next one. That’s a scary movie.

If next week you find that this site is now selling windmills, or organic Viagra, that might be an indication that I have gone under water. Stay tuned for the final conclusion, or continued weirdness.

“Adopt A Sailor” was a really nice little movie I watched this evening. And “Book Of Eli” is great.

audio: flames from trane 1965

Posted in audio, jazz music with tags , , on September 25, 2010 by Word-Drum

Close your eyes and hold on. Something got into Trane in 1965. Where ever he flew, Elvin was there with him.

The tempo is the speed of light. The feeling is a little mad, like Vincent van Gogh, yet the music’s brilliance burns like the sun. (It’s a live recording so adjust your ears accordingly.)

This ain’t ‘Smooth Jazz.’ This is as hard as it gets.

I put lyrics to Coltrane’s urgent repetitive riff: “We Don’t Like This Government!” Do you feel me?!

hole in the heart

Bloomberg New Yorkers have responded to 9/11 with a big Zero. Where great buildings should stand to replace the Towers, there is nothing. Where leadership is needed, there is nothing.

Maybe Michelle and Barack are right: America Sucks.

But while the liberals do nothing to protect us from the Islamic onslaught, criminals flowing over the border, Russian, Chinese or Iranian threats, they are busy getting into every aspect of our personal business. It doesn’t matter that most of what they want to impose on us is based on Junk Science. Why liberals don’t want to tell our enemies what to do, just the American people, is yet another reason to hate them all.

There’s a hole where the World Trade Center once towered over the City.

There’s an asshole at Gracie Mansion where Rudi once lived.

And there’s whole lot of nothin’ in the White House where there once lived great men who loved their country and it’s people. There’s a hole…

Monday: nothing; Tuesday: nothing; next Saturday: nothing.

                                      Where are we now?

The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives

The New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein.

Charles Ives, like Frank Zappa and Ray Charles, is quintessential Americana. This is his best known piece in a great performance conducted by another classic American musician who I once met when I was a student composer at Tanglewood. Bernstein gave Ives many of his first performances.

“ The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principals of Christianity… I will avow that I believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”
• “[July 4th] ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”

thumbnailCAOMK2OKThis is a weird way to mark my birthday. In the history of Modern Music, Frank Zappa will go down as a Great American Composer. Embodying Experimentalism from the 1960s and surpassing it. 200 Motels was a culmination of the early work (my favorite period) of Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention. The conductor Zuben Mehta made Frank take his name off the credits. That’s his loss.

Mark Levin first came on the air in New York City on WABC. It coincided with my return to America and the New York Area.

9/11 and the election campaign I came back to follow and vote in, had turned me against the liberals and their pukie candidate John F-ing Kerry.

Mark is funny and passionately serious too. His breath of knowledge and experience in the legal profession and in government, is a great resource to the talk radio audience.

This listener is drawn to a world where the Military, Police and Emergency Services workers, families of the 9/11 victims, Gold Star and all the families of the Troops, are not forgotten…

Where our fundamental right to liberty, handed down to us, is reinforced and not forgotten, for more frivolous matters.

The informative radio show is presented by the amusing grouch Levin. It is 5 star Talk Radio.

how long has this been going on?

jazz_pianonot blogging much this summer. making a record (or a good demo I can use to make a CD for Blue Note Records, or Enja Records, who I have recorded for before). If you listened to what I posted two weeks ago, you have to go back. I’m redoing everything and have a new song I want you to hear.

“How Long Has This Been Going On?”- HERE

And the new arrangement of “Small Hotel.”

                                     Mile High Standards

(“Small Hotel” has a new version and arrangement)

Go HERE and download these songs (for free). Hear some swinging jazz, a funky version of “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,” and a fresh Latin-Jazz-Rock arrangement of Billie Strayhorn’s “Raincheck.” [songs first posted have been revised]

For the Avant Garde, check out the last song(not part of the CD), a “Free-Hop” improvisation called “government.” I jam with Ronald Reagan on that one.

Mile High Standards (free to download Here)

– “Small Hotel”
– “Raincheck”
– “How Long Has Thias been Going On”
-“Fine and Dandy”
– “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows”
– “Way Down Yonder In New Orleans”
– “When Your Lover Has Gone”
– “Two Sleepy People”
– “government”

All music arranged, performed (vocals, piano, guitar, samples, loops) and recorded by Word-Drum.

“Compulsion” – Davis – New York, 30.1.1953 –
Miles Davis Sextet:
Miles Davis: Trumpet
Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins: Tenor sax
Walter Bishop: Piano
Percy Heath: Bass
“Philly” Joe Jones: Drums

Bird on tenor! A young Philly Joe! Bird and Rollins sound much alike. Big surprise. Charlie Parker takes the first tenor solo, Rollins is next, in this rare recording.
